The Pink Panther (200?)

Plot:  Unknown. Based on the the Pink Panther series of movies that starred Peter Sellers as the bumbling French Inspector Clouseau.

News:

Apparently MGM hasn't given up on reviving this series just yet. It is now rumored that Chris Tucker is circling the lead role. He apparently attended a reading of the script with director Ivan Reitman on Thursday. You can now call me officially horrified. The idea of the preternaturally loud Tucker in the role of Clouseau is disturbing to say the least. Even worse though is the thought of Reitman, a once great comedic director who now seems to have completely lost his instincts, as the director. Consider yourselves on high alert about this one.

Thankfully the story from the other day that had Kevin Spacey possibly playing the part of Inspector Clouseau in a remake of Peter Seller's old Pink Panther movies was false.

Spacey talked to Reuters and said, "I'm not -- never signed, never been offered the role." He did say that he had "two conversations" about it but now he is "pouring water on it because I'm not doing it."

That's not to say it couldn't be a possibility sometime in the future. "If I end up doing it, it might be six months down the line, when I actually read a script and decide ... they've really done something here that's not an imitation, because I wouldn't want to do that."

Kevin Spacey is apparently in negotiations to star as Inspector Clouseau in a remake of the Pink Panther movies. MGM Vice Chairman Chris McGurk said that a script is nearly complete. Ivan Reitman will be producing and shooting could start as early as this fall.

Spacey hasn't signed but is giving serious consideration to the project. That's a smart move on his part. By taking on the Inspector Clouseau role, Spacey would be stepping into the shoes of a comic genius. Peter Sellers portrayed Clouseau in five films, plus one made after his death using outtakes from the earlier films.

While I'm a big fan of Spacey's work, I'm not exactly thrilled with this news. Sellers was brilliant in the Pink Panther movies. Let them be. Try something new for a change. There is absolutely no need to remake these movies. The best we could hope for is that the movie would be almost as good. If they can't make a better movie, it doesn't make sense to try. Hopefully Spacey will pass on the project and this remake will never get made.

Thanks to Reuters.
