Tom Cruise is in negotiations to take the starring role in this film. The Civil War project would be directed by Anthony Minghella (The Talented Mr. Ripley). Cruise would play Inman, a wounded soldier trying to return home. He hopes to be reunited with his pre-war girlfriend Ada. The movie would follow his journey as well as Ada's struggles to keep her family farm afloat after the death of her father.
Apparently Renee Zellwegger is considering the Ada role. The only obstacle would be potential scheduling conflicts with her next project, the film adaptation of Broadway musical Chicago. This would reunite the two for the first time since they starred together in Jerry Maguire.
