DVD Releases for 26 December, 2000

Okay, so Christmas has come and gone, and you've already watched Se7en with all four commentary tracks, and puzzled over the merits of the alternate endings. So what to do now? Trade in those crappy gifts and go buy these new DVD releases!

  1. Time Code - From director Mike Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas), the most innovative mainstream movie of the year: watch simultaneous action in four quadrants of your screen, all in real time. For film buffs and students mostly, as the gimmick will wear thin on the casual viewer. Stars Saffron Burrows, Salma Hayek, Stellan Skarsgard and Jeanne Tripplehorn.
  2. The Exorcist: The Version You've Never Seen - Well, just like the Star Wars special editions, the jury's still out on this one. If you've never seen The Exorcist, I'd recommend buying the original that caused all the commotion. Word is some of the extra footage is downright goofy.
  3. Godzilla 2000 - Rule #37 of Film: any movie with a year following a franchise name (i.e., Dracula 2000, Pokemon 2000, Godzilla 1985) must suck. Watch this only if you find men in lizard suits amusing. I just cannot wait until Godzilla 2015.
  4. The Art of War - The obligatory mediocre Wesley Snipes action flick of the year. Makes for good watching on HBO, but do you really want to own it? Probably only if you're writing a thesis on how The Matrix has completely infiltrated our culture, and how action movies can't help but rip it off.
  5. Courage Under Fire: SE - Denzel Washington, Meg Ryan, Matt Damon, and Lou Diamond Philips (yep, that's right) in a ripping good military yarn. I wouldn't call it a classic, but better than your typical movie that becomes completely forgotten.

Of course, it goes without saying that if you didn't get Se7en for Christmas, you need to buy it first and foremost.
