DVD Releases for 21 November, 2000

Well my fellow mutants and romans, after last week's lackluster slate of digital film, we're all in for some Thanksgiving treats this Tuesday. November's already been an expensive month for the dvd afficionado, and it ain't getting any better with this crop...get the old wallets out and "on my mark, unleash Hell!"

  1. Gladiator -- The movie that made Russell Crowe a household name, and deservedly so. This movie is awe-inspiring, and has a real shot at winning Best Picture next spring. (Braveheart won in '96) This is a 2-dvd set, so get ready for hours of gladiatorial fun n' games. Director Ridley Scott scores again. With Alien and Blade Runner already to his credit, this certainly cements his spot in the directors hall of fame. (if there were such a thing)
  2. X-Men -- Probably the biggest surprise of the year. The internet buzz surrounding this flick after months and months of anticipation was universally bad, and what do you know? It didn't suck. Not the greatest sci fi flick ever, but certainly entertaining, and sets up some potentially awesome sequels. Said to include over ten minutes of extra footage that Singer didn't have ready in time for the theatrical run. Be wary: word is this will be re-released next year with even more footage -- Singer is a perfectionist and he's not done yet. (Editor's Note: The second X-Men DVD is just a rumor. Fox and Singer officially deny the plans)
  3. Chicken Run -- From the makers of Wallace & Gromit, a real animated gem. And it actually made money despite not having "Disney" or "Pixar" stamped on it. Who doesn't love a chicken-coop jailbreak adventure. With Mel Gibson's voice no less.
  4. Bridge of the River Kwai -- Alec Guinness leads a group of British POWs forced to build a bridge by their Japanese captors. I've actually never seen this one, but it must be a classic for a reason.

Other notables:
Romper Stomper, No Way Back -- 2 more australian Russell Crowe flicks to hit the market. (Heaven's Burning is already out, which is pretty decent, and cheap) Planes, Trains, & Automobiles -- John Candy and Steve Martin in the 80s John Hughes classic, and Year of the Horse - Jim Jarmusch's documentary on Neil Young and Crazy Horse.

Til All Are One --

- Ultra Magnus
