Re-release Rant Part II

The new American Pie DVD came out last week, entitled the "Ultimate Edition". This is yet another title in the long list of re-released DVDs. Why was this film released again after such a nice "Collector's Edition" treatment? American Pie 2 comes out this week and it helps with marketing and sales. While it is not always the case to put out a re-release on DVD before a sequel of sorts, it's been happening more and more frequently. The Mummy: Ultimate Edition came out the week before The Mummy Returns. There are numerous examples to page through. We have a new edition of Silence of the Lambs on the horizion, why? It comes out the same week Hannibal does... I hate re-issues. I mean, I like them for the extra features. However, they should of done it right the first time around.

So far, I have only bought one DVD twice. The Terminator 2 DVD. There are numerous others I would like to buy again, such as the Dogma Special Edition, the Dr. Strangelove Special Edition, the whole Kubrick set, and others. I hate to spend money on the same DVDs twice, but if I love the movie and want the special features, why not? I, however, hate the feeling of finding out a DVD will be re-released. Upcoming rumored re-releases are Blade Runner, Batman, Almost Famous, The English Patient, The Game, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Reservior Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Traffic. I own the majority of these DVDs already. This really sucks. DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME!

I've heard so many complaints during this whole stage of re-releases. Mainly over the Boogie Nights/Seven/Dogma/Kubrick re-releases. It's upsetting when you find out that your copy is no longer the best one out there in way of special features (at least if you really like the movie and you invested the money the first time). It worries me that this might plague the Star Wars DVDs and numerous other films coming out with sequels and such.

My guess would be to watch for a Dr. Doolittle Five Star edition when Dr. Doolittle 2 comes out. The advice I can give is to stay tuned for news on re-issues and plan accordingly.
