Upcoming DVDs
Browsing through the list of the upcoming titles, I find a lot of big names that I would really like to own. (However, due to an agreement with my parents, I can't buy any more until after Labor Day.) Let's take a look....
We have Akira coming out, a movie I've never seen and really want to see. (I plan on trying to try and see it or buy it at Milwaukee's Gen Con in August.) It's a two disc set, a really decent sounding transfer on it, the screenplay, a documentary on the film, a documentary on the soundtrack, a director's interview, production materials, a restoration documentary, a glossary, and if you buy the special edition, you get a tin. Not a bad sounding DVD.....
Next we have The Mexican. I saw this flick twice and I really enjoyed it, it's really entertaining and it was not bad at all. The DVD looks like it's going to be decent, a commentary, deleted scenes, and a documentary. However, sometimes when they say "documentary" you get like a three minute feature (the "Payback" DVD documentary sucks). I hope this disc is decent...
We have Hannibal coming in August. A loaded two disc set with commentary, lots of deleted scenes, 5 making of featurettes, photo gallery, and three multi-angle documentaries. Decent, I wish I could buy this one too. Also, a Silence of the Lambs DVD is coming out from MGM. This is not the original that sucked and it is not the discontinued Criterion one (which I own). This sounds like a decent disc, it's got deleted scenes, interviews, making of featurette, outtake reel, and photo gallery. Not as good as the Criterion, which has a commentary, but the Criterion doesn't have a feature. (Like I said about The Mexican, the featurettes sometimes suck.)
We also have Forrest Gump in August. Now, I hated this movie. It's not a bad movie, I just couldn't believe it at all. I only watched it once and never plan on watching it again or buying the DVD. The disc has two commentaries, four documentaries, a photo gallery, and screen tests. Even a big DVD release couldn't persuade me to buy this trash.
One of the best movies of the year, Memento, is getting a horrible DVD treatment. It's bare bones, basically nothing except trailers. Such a damn shame, I had heard this thing was going to be packed. I'm going to cry myself to sleep now...
