DVD Releases for 10 April, 2001

No blockbusters here, but a decent slate of new releases. Enjoy.

#1

Bounce - a surprisingly good little film from auteur Don Roos (The Opposite of Sex). Affleck and Paltrow are both very likeable, and Tony Goldwyn puts in yet another good supporting performance. For more, check out the review. That being said, however, I'm not sure this really needs two discs, but that's what you'll get -- a commentary track with Roos, Affleck and Paltrow, a "making of" featurette, deleted footage w/ commentary, a gag reel, "need to be next to you" music video, and a "Ben and Gwyneth Go Behind the Scenes" featurette. Hmm...between that and the "gag reel," this could be Ben/Gwyneth overload, but like I said, it's a decent little flick. Check out my review here.

Men of Honor - Special Edition -- the inspiring, if not conventional biopic of Carl Brashear, who became the first african-american master diver in the U.S. Navy, despite the lingering effects of segregation and an amputated left leg. Gooding is solid, De Niro is typical De Niro, and the seemingly unstoppable Charlize Theron sneaks in as well. Comes with a commentary track featuring Gooding and director Tillman, an alternate ending with eleven deleted scenes with commentaries, animated storyboards, "Master Chief: A Tribute to Carl Brashear", the HBO First Look special, and a Brian McKnight music video. If you liked the movie, you can't ask for more. Check out Shea's review here.

#3

Allosaurus - A Walking With Dinosaurs Special -- the thirty minute spawn of the immensely popular BBC series. Again, a combination of CGI, puppetry, and story-driven narration by Kenneth Branagh. Also comes with a photo gallery, storyboard sequences, and loads of dvd-rom content. Comes for about a third the cost of the original special.

Tank Girl (1995) -- the moniker "cult classic" is thrown around a little too loosely these days. By now, I think Army of Darkness and Blade Runner, for instance, are just simply classics. But this, on the other hand, is a true cult classic -- almost nobody saw it at the theatres or video, and it's so bad that it's good. I love this flick, which is based on the British comic of the same name. Lori Petty is perfectly cast as Tank Girl, and Malcolm McDowell is the bad guy. (can he play any other kind?) It's good ol' post-apocalyptic hi-jinks, with attitude to spare. But do go buying it for the extras -- because all you get is the treatrical trailer, but at least it's widescreen anamorphic.

#5

Live Flesh (1998) -- many of you probably heard of this for the first time during the oscars when Steve Martin made a joke about it's title when introducing Penelope Cruz. It's an Almodovar film (All About My Mother), which also stars the oscar-nominated Javier Barden in addition to the absolutely luscious Cruz. The story involves a young man who does time for accidentally killing a cop, then has a torrid affair once out with the woman who was married to him. As for features, you get the obligatory trailer, but the movie is anamorphic.
