Fellowship of the Ring

New Line is preparing two different versions of the film for release on DVD. The first version, a double disc set, will be released on August 6. The second version will appear on shelves November 12. What sets the second version apart is a new extended cut of the film, expected to add some thirty more minutes to the film's existing three hour running time.

This longer version will be part of a four disc boxed set. It will be a more violent, bloody version that should earn an R rating. As part of this new version, there will be a new score by composer Howard Shore. "Our special extended edition has 30 minutes of never-before-seen footage that is integrated into the film, and you can’t do that without changing the score," said Stephen Einhorn, president and chief operating officer of New Line Home Entertainment.

It should be made very clear that this longer version is not to be considered the director's cut. Peter Jackson has been very emphatic in that point, insisting that both versions are director's cuts. In other words, the theatrical version is one that he is satisfied with and the new version exists simply to give fans even more of what they love.
