DVD Releases for 27 March, 2001
Well, for the second week in a row, the theme is sci-fi. Thankfully, it's my favorite genre (as Shea has dubbed me the resident sci-fi fanatic I think...) and once again, the offerings are pretty decent. The DVD release schedule certainly seems to go thru up and downcycles doesn't it? We're definitely in an upcycle right now, and damn if my wallet isn't taking the hit...
| #1 | Red Planet -- Many people were underwhelmed by 2000's other Mars movie. Personally, I thought it was pretty good. I'm a big fan of the simple, straightforward survival story. I think this movie makes a great companion piece to 2000's other sci fi thriller, Pitch Black. (though not nearly as stylish) It's not gonna change the world, but Val Kilmer and Carrie-Anne Moss are two of my favs. Competent direction by commercial-vet Antony Hoffman. The DVD release reflects its box office receipts, however -- as in not that great. Only comes with deleted scenes and cast/director highlights. That lack of attention is alarming, but at least it's bargain priced. And for a limited time, shipping is free. For more info, read the club's review. |

| #2 | The 6th Day -- Like Red Planet, it could have been better, but it was Arnold's best movie in a long, long time. Will it join the ranks of Total Recall and Terminator? No, but maybe more along the lines of Predator or The Running Man. Certainly better than End of Days... Anyway, comes with trailers, "The Future is Coming" featurette, storyboards-to-film, animatics, and some "Re-Pet" infomercials. Not quite a special edition, but good. Like the movie itself. Sorry, no reviews on this one, even the TNMC takes days off. |

| #3 | Charlie's Angels: Special Edition -- How do I say this?...This is one bad movie, yet it is undoubtedly thoroughly entertaining. It's really unreviewable, because it's so damn ludicrous. And I still don't know if I loved or hated McG's direction. Bottom line, it's a fun movie, if you can just relax. And hey, any movie with George McFly himself (Crispin Glover), not to mention Bill Murray, is alright by me. This dvd is stacked -- trailers, commentary by the director and dp, five featurettes not including one about the SFX called "Wired Angels", deleted and extended scenes, outtakes and bloopers, and a music video by Destiny's Child. And once again, free shipping for a limited time. You can read the club's take, right here. |

| #4 | Rugrats in Paris: The Movie -- as opposed to Rugrats in Paris: the series? Oh well, I never saw this, but if you like the Rugrats, then you probably want to know what's on this DVD. You get trailers, a music video, a documentary, a sound effect showcase, two (!) alternate endings, and two dvd-rom games. More Rugrats stuff than any sane person can handle, of that I'm sure. |

| #5 | Girlfight -- the indie film that was the talk of the country, and then left public conciousness faster than Gone in 60 Seconds. I guess the target audience for this was the one or two women that enjoyed Rocky... anyway, comes with trailers, a director's commentary, and 'making-of' documentary. Read Tyler Durden's review here. |
